The LT1/L98 Iroc-Z

So I've got the Iroc-Z, now what?... Modding! The original 1985 Iroc-Z came with the LB9 305ci 5.0L engine with TPI (Tuned Port Injection). Much to my delight, this particular car had the L98 350ci 5.7 engine from 1987 transplanted in it (also with TPI). So as I bought the car there it stood. A stock small block chevy 350 with untapped potential. The only performance parts on it were an Accell super coil and 8mm plug wires that came with the car.

So what did I do to the Camaro? Plenty of stuff. Below are two lists, the list of mods that the Camaro had in its prime, and the list of mods it carries right now as we speak. I've also included a few performance numbers I've managed to collect from dynos and G-Tech runs.

I think the first thing I did to the car was the subframe connectors. With a T-top car you need stability, not only that but these car had enough torque and a weak enough body to cause stress fractures on a hardtop. After the subframes I went to work on the bolt ons like exhaust and a fuel pressure regulator. I was still a novice modder so the bigger things hadn't occured to me yet.

After I had the car about a year I was out with my friend Greg outside our house at school. I wanted to show him some of the Camaro's power, and it gave us quite a show. I pulled up the the light at our house, waited to the light to turn green, then hit it. The car took off with a roar of the motor and screech of the tires... then the tranny shifted into second gear and... BOOM!...the torque blew up the rear differential. Well, needles to say, the result of this was a race re-built tranny and beefed up rear end with 3.73 gears.

A couple years had passed with some modding here and there when the big idea hit. A guy on thridgen.org named John Millican had found a way to put the newer LT1 intake manifolds on the older L98 blocks. This was it! TPI had incredible torque buts its horsepower was always limited by its restrictive intake. More info on my LT1 conversion is posted at the link below

After this the rest is history, perfomance heads, a high lift cam, nitrous oxide, the works. It was one mean car. Why isn't it still mean? Well, money sucks. That's the way it usually goes. The car was getting a bit too expensive, and problems tuning the hi-performance setup gave me too many headaches. So, I decided to get some money back and make a more streeable car. I sold the heads and nitrous and rebuilt the motor, putting in an LT1 cam and porting the stock heads a bit. Here is where it stands now. One of the first and few L98/LT1's in existence.
